En 1939 [René Jules Dubos] culminó su investigación con el aislamiento de Bacillus brevis, del que extrajo un agente antibacteriano al que llamó tirotricina. La tirotricina no era una enzima simple, sino que contenía dos polipéptidos, tirocidina y gramicidina.
