La coupe à blanc a un effet particulièrement destructeur sur les écosystèmes normaux lorsqu'elle vise tous les arbres vivants (quel que soit leur âge, et parfois même en terrain escarpé, ce qui présente un risque d'érosion massive des sols et d'envasement des cours d'eau) et lorsqu'on brûle ensuite les débris de branches et de bois en putréfaction et qu'on détruit ainsi une bonne partie du sol superficiel, avec sa microflore et sa microfaune très diversifiées, ses plantes de sous-bois, ses graines et ses racines.
