[Le] codage des signaux vidéo couleur Y, Db, Dr est appelé codage en composantes séparées («analog component» en anglais). Il est utilisé couramment depuis le milieu des années 80 dans la production vidéo professionnelle suite au lancement des formats de magnétoscopes Betacam et MII, car ceux-ci enregistrent les signaux vidéo dans ce type de codage. Par rapport aux codages vidéo habituels PAL, SECAM ou NTSC, le codage en composantes complique le câblage des équipements et nécessite un triplement des circuits électroniques. Mais les gains en volume des circuits électroniques et la baisse de leur coûts ont poussé à une généralisation de ces types de codage vidéo couleur.
