Le coefficient de distorsion représente le dernier critère qualitatif de la Hi-Fi. Lorsque des fréquences parasites sont ajoutées involontairement à une source sonore originale (par exemple à cause d'une surcharge d'éléments électroniques), on parle de coefficient de distorsion. Ce dernier est en règle générale précisé sous forme de pourcentage. Il représente la part des fréquences parasites par rapport aux fréquences originales. Plus ce pourcentage est faible, meilleur sera l'enregistrement. Certains amplificateurs sont par exemple caractérisés par des coefficients de distorsion inférieurs à 1 %.
