The van der Waals bonding results from the displacement of the atomic nuclei from the centres of the electron charge distribution in each atom, the displacement resulting when neutral atoms or molecules are brought close to each other.

Les liaisons de Van der Waals seraient dues à la résonance de états vibratoires des atomes; elles existent dans toutes les structures mais leur intensité est très faible par rapport aux autres liaisons. Dans les rares minéraux à réseaux moléculaires (soufre, réalgar [...], calomel [...]) les liaisons intramoléculaires, covalentes, sont fortes, alors que les molécules sont faiblement liées entre elles par des forces de Van der Waals.
