On emploie le terme «break» dans l'expression «faire le break», sans que cela ait quelque chose à voir avec le «tie-break». Il s'agit d'un anglicisme qui signifie «prendre le service de l'adversaire». Certains considèrent que l'on ne peut à proprement parler de «break» que lorsqu'un joueur mène par deux jeux d'écart, c'est-à-dire lorsqu'il a pris le service adverse et ensuite gagné le sien. Mais, le plus souvent, on emploie cette expression pour signifier qu'un joueur a pris le service de l'autre.
