Terme du vocabulaire marxiste désignant ceux qui, au sein du prolétariat, sont dépourvus de toute conscience politique. (...) Cette expression imagée,régulièrement accompagnée chez Marx et Engels d'épithètes péjoratives --"lie d'individus corrompus", "pourriture inerte", "pègre"--, est pratiquement synonyme pour ces auteurs de sous-prolétariat et de classe dangereuse. Elle désigne les masses urbaines marginales, vivant de manière parasitaire et fondamentalement incapables d'accéder jamais à une conscience révolutionnaire.
