[...] Lénard avait constaté que le faisceau de rayons cathodiques pouvait exciter une substance fluorescente au point d'impact avec le verre et que, contrairement à la lumière, il était capable de traverser un mince hublot métallique placé sur la paroi du tube. Lénard avait ainsi perfectionné le tube afin d'étudier les rayons cathodiques en eux-mêmes. Pour protéger la zone expérimentale de tout rayonnement lumineux, il bardait le tube et le hublot d'une feuille opaque de plomb et d'étain.
