Traditionnellement, l'une des principales méthodes de contrôle de la mortalité par pêche est la réglementation du maillage. Ses aspects théoriques ont été éclaircis par Beverton et Holt (1957) et peuvent être résumés de façon simple : l'utilisation d'un filet à maille plus grande permet aux jeunes poissons de s'échapper et donc de grandir et contribuer à la biomasse du stock les années suivantes.
