The materials of the parent bodies from which a new individual develops are its actual heritage. During its own embryonic development, the potentialities of this heritage are expressed in the structural characteristics of the new body, normally like those of the parents or those of a more remote generation of ancestors. Cet ensemble de caractères et potentialités inclut aussi bien ceux qui sont communs à tous les membres du groupe taxinomique auquel appartient l'individu considéré (hérédité générale) que ceux qui éventuellement le singularise à l'intérieur de ce groupe (hérédité spéciale). Pour sa part essentielle, l'hérédité résulte de l'aptitude à l'auto-reproduction conforme des molécules d'ADN (ou d'ARN pour certains virus), dont l'ensemble constitue ce qui est appelé le matériel génétique. Chez les eucaryotes, le matériel génétique est surtout localisé dans les chromosomes, mais il existe également dans les mitochondries et les plastes et peut-être dans d'autres organismes cytoplasmiques. A côté de cette hérédité fondamentale, que l'on peut qualifier de nucléique, on observe, chez certains organismes deux autres mécanismes pouvant assurer la persistance de variations héréditaires.
