The most common way of compensating fishermen is via a percentage of the value of the landed catch, after expenses are backed out. Danish [and] Scottish seining methods are used to catch species of groundfish such as flounder and cod. Both methods use similar nets and series of ropes spread out in a pear-shaped form along the ocean floor. The action of the ropes stirs up a mud cloud and herds the fish into the path of the net. In Danish seining, the vessel remains in a fixed position while the gear is hauled along the bottom. In Scottish seining, the net and ropes are towed along the ocean floor while they are closing. Box nets can be fished at any time in the daily tide cycle and with any frequency. [The fishing] procedure is as follows. The tie-back ropes on one end of the net are slackened; then, this end of the net is gradually hauled onto the ice through the fishing hole. As the net is hauled, fish are "shook back" from the trap into the bunt. The bunt is untied and the fish removed; the bunt is then retied. The tie-back ropes are tightened, hauling the net back into position beneath the ice. Tie-back ropes are secured. 3, record 18, English, - box%20net

Extending outward from the centre of the doorway is a long wall of netting which, because of its function of leading fish into the trap, came to be called the leader. The trap is kept upright in the water by floats placed along the top of the walls, and lead weights at the bottom. When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves. 1, record 36, English, - docking%20telegraph

Kernmantel ropes... are either static, which means the rope has no stretch, or they are dynamic which means that the rope has a shock absorbing capacity.... static rope is sometimes used for rope runners or as accessory cord. Static rope does have its uses in specific situations such as abseiling prusiking, or for example, when cleaning new routes, when it can be important not to have a stretchy rope which will rub over sharp edges in a swing motion, and can easily cut through. However, whilst static ropes do not stretch as a climber bounces during abseiling, they do vibrate from side to side which can cause fraying. 2, record 90, English, - static%20rope
