Le rayonnement est une forme de transfert d'énergie au moyen de «rayons» calorifiques (ou «lumière invisible») traversant un milieu ou «médium» de transfert sans affecter la température de ce dernier (propagation des rayons solaires à travers l'atmosphère, par exemple). La chaleur ne se manifeste donc que quand les rayons atteignent et frappent une quelconque substance opaque (briques, pierres d'un mur, etc.), en cédant alors à cet «obstacle» leur chaleur. En d'autres termes, les rayons calorifiques émanant de la surface du corps chaud sont absorbés par la surface du corps froid. Les surfaces sombres, mates ou rugueuses absorbent mieux la chaleur que les surfaces claires et polies.
