Color enhancement is a procedure where specified levels of energy—in this example, infrared energy—are given a specific colour. This makes locations with the desired energies easier to locate. In this example, shades of yellow and orange represent infrared energy emissions consistent with strong thunderstorms. This is because infrared energy is proportional to brightness temperature, and the highest cloud tops are colder than those at lower altitudes (the highest cloud tops are typically associated with the strongest thunderstorms). 1, record 1, English, - false%2Dcolour%20enhancement

Near infrared microscopy has shown potential to discriminate bone particles of fish origin and those of terrestrial animal origin in the sediment fraction of feedstuffs. In this study, the use of this method for the detection of processed animal proteins in the flotate is investigated. First, we show that it is possible to recognize animal particles in the flotate based on a spectral analysis. Secondly, the analysis of several spectra indicates that the near infrared microscopy could differentiate classes of animals. 4, record 3, English, - near%20infrared%20microscopy

3, record 18, French, - infrarouge%20fausses%20couleurs

Earth observation satellites are used to observe the earth surfaces, sea surfaces, ocean currents, clouds, etc., from space. Observation instruments are installed on satellites for remote sensing purposes. There is a relatively short development time for a long duration mission. Once launched, it has the advantage of being able to observe wide areas. Instrument operations can be easily performed from the console of a ground control station. Issues with satellite-based remote sensing are as follows: a lengthy development time from planning to actual operations, significant initial investments, risk of launch failure and inability to repair the satellite up in space. 1, record 21, English, - observation%20satellite

2, record 21, French, - satellite%20d%26rsquo%3Bobservation

Along-track scanners also use the forward motion of the platform to record successive scan lines and build up a two-dimensional image, perpendicular to the flight direction. However, instead of a scanning mirror, they use a linear array of detectors located at the focal plane of the image formed by lens systems, which are "pushed" along in the flight track direction (i.e. along track). These systems are also referred to as pushbroom scanners, as the motion of the detector array is analogous to the bristles of a broom being pushed along a floor. 3, record 23, English, - along%2Dtrack%20scanner

2, record 24, French, - capteur%20%C3%A0%20barrettes

Satellite derived remote sensed images are representations of the variation in intensity of electromagnetic energy reflected from the Earth's surface. Aerial photographs use only the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (5 x 107 metres = .5 microns), whereas Landsat TM and SPOT images record the Earth's reflectivity at seven different wavelengths in the visible and infrared range, and radar images record the reflectivity of wavelengths in the non-visible range of 1 to 10 cm (microwaves). 3, record 25, English, - infrared%20band

Analyses of whole or ground grain by physical methods would be better suited to handling large numbers of samples, as in protein segregation of carlots, or continuous monitoring as in loading an export cargo. Such procedures are now known and include near infrared reflectance (NIR) and near infrared transmission spectroscopy. NIR instruments have been in use for protein segregation in Canadian terminal elevators since 1975. The accuracy and precision of these instruments are equivalent to most of the standard methods of protein analysis including the Kjeldahl. NIR instruments are the most recent introduction to protein testing. They are very rapid and do not require the grain to be ground. An additional advantage of these instruments is their capacity for similarly determining moisture as well as protein. The accuracy of NIR instruments seems adequate for protein segregation. 1, record 45, English, - near%20infrared%20transmission%20spectroscopy

1, record 45, French, - spectroscopie%20de%20transmission%20dans%20le%20proche%20infrarouge

Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) is an accurate, precise, and rapid alternative to wet chemistry procedures for determining concentrations of major classes of chemical compounds in organic materials, such as plant foliage. The method utilizes reflectance signals resulting from bending and stretching vibrations in molecular bonds between carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen. Calibration is required to correlate the spectral response of each sample at individual wavelengths to known chemical concentrations from laboratory analyses. 4, record 46, English, - near%20infrared%20reflectance%20spectroscopy

3, record 46, French, - spectroscopie%20de%20r%C3%A9flectance%20dans%20le%20proche%20infrarouge

What are PDLCs? Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystals consist of liquid crystal droplets that are dispersed in a solid polymer backbone. The resulting material is a sort of "swiss cheese" polymer with liquid crystal droplets filling in the holes. These tiny droplets (a few microns across for practical applications) are responsible for the unique behavior of the material. By changing the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules with an electric field, it is possible to vary the intensity of transmitted light. 1, record 48, English, - polymer%20dispersed%20liquid%20crystal

2, record 48, French, - cristal%20liquide%20dispers%C3%A9%20dans%20les%20photopolym%C3%A8res
