The Irish are a celtic people. It is a linguistis term and not a racial one, marking out a member of the Celtic-speaking peoples.

The Celts emerged from the Rhinelands of Central Europe as a distinctive group of clans or tribes between 1000 and 500 BC. Their language, religion, social organization and customs were different from those in the Mediterranean south, or further east by the Danube.
