Description : Petit crustacé de l'ordre des cladocères, dont le corps est recouvert d'une carapace transparente. Il possède 2 paires de longues antennes natatoires et un œil unique. Les œufs sont souvent visibles dans la poche incubatrice dorsale. La teinte d'une daphnie est fonction de son alimentation : Les daphnies blanches ou transparentes se sont nourries de bactéries. [...] Les daphnies roses ou rouges se sont nourries ou ont été forcées au sang. [...] Les daphnies brunes sont théoriquement les daphnies naturelles nourries au plancton.
