Il y a deux catégories de grues à tour : les grues à montage rapide tournant du bas où le mât de la grue est solidaire de la plate-forme tournante de l'appareil. Dans cette configuration, le mât tourne avec la flèche; les grues à tour pour lesquelles le mât est fixe et où l'ensemble de la partie supérieure pivote au sommet du mât. [...] Les grues à tour se rencontrent dans les chantiers de bâtiment, de travaux publics et également sur les parcs de stockage d'usine, ainsi que sur les chantiers navals. Elles sont utilisées dans diverses configurations selon les impératifs du chantier : --En déplacement sur voie c'est-à-dire en translation sur un châssis ou sur une remorque; --Stationnaires sur châssis; sur pieds de scellement.
