During the 19th century, Jasper House served as a meeting place for people journeying through the Athabasca and Yellowhead passes.

It was originally named "Rocky Mountain House," but to avoid confusion with the "Rocky Mountain House" located on the North Saskatchewan River, the post became known as "Jasper's House" in 1817.
