En 1914, après que Simmonds eut découvert, en faisant l'autopsie de patients cachectiques, des lésions microscopiques destructives dans l'hypophyse, on employait indistinctement le terme maladie de Simmonds pour tous les patients qui accusaient une perte de poids extrême, et l'anorexie mentale était donc diagnostiquée à tort comme une cachexie hypophysaire et traitée de manière inefficace avec des extraits d'hypophyse.
