Lithofacies of stratafer sediments that contain more than 15% iron are classified as iron-formation. They are widely distributed throughout the geological record and were deposited in a broad spectrum of depositional environments ranging from continental shelves and platforms, through craton and oceanic plate margins, to tectonic basins and volcanic arcs along subduction zones.
