When proceeding under self-sustaining conditions, the reaction can be stopped by interrupting the addition of sulphur dioxide and oxygen for periods as long as sixty-four hours, after which sulfoxidation can be resumed by simply passing these gases through the hydrocarbon with no additional radiation being needed.
