The SmartGate system automates the identity verification process for aircrew crossing Australia's border. It simply performs the face to passport check currently undertaken by a Customs officer. The system uses photo-matching technology to compare a live image taken at the SmartGate transaction point against one or more stored images.

Il compare simplement le visage d'une personne à sa photographie de passeport, vérification présentement effectuée par un agent des douanes.
