Trench screw jacks are sometimes used to replace wooden cross braces in trench rescue applications. These devices consist of a swivel footplate with a stem that is inserted into one end of a section of 2-inch steel pipe and a second swivel footplate with a threaded stem that is inserted into the other end of the pipe.
