Le ballon est réputé tenu lorsque deux ou plusieurs adversaires le tiennent fermement d'une ou des deux mains (B) ou quand un joueur dépasse le temps réglementaire de 5 s pour lancer, passer, rouler ou dribbler le ballon. Les arbitres doivent éviter d'interrompre inutilement le déroulement du jeu à cause d'un ballon tenu. Si un joueur en possession du ballon est assis ou étendu sur le sol, il faut lui laisser la possibilité de compléter son jeu. Après un ballon tenu, la remise en jeu est effectuée par un entre-deux avec les deux joueurs impliqués dans le cercle le plus près.
