English

Subject field(s)
  • Aquaculture
  • Mollusks, Echinoderms and Prochordates
DEF

A rope system that is anchored to the bottom and maintained afloat by buoys to support culture gear or lines on which scallops are grown by ear hanging.

CONT

In a longline system a length of line is anchored at both ends, flotation is attached and various types of culture systems are hung on the line. These include lantern net, pearl net or ear-hanging of scallops, grow-out of mussels, nursery rearing of clams and oysters, and grow-out systems for oysters involving tubes, trays, bags or string cultch.

OBS

The terms "main line" and "mainline" are considerably less common than the term "longline" and its almost as common spelling variant "long line". They oppose the notion of "branch line".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Aquaculture
  • Mollusques, échinodermes et procordés
DEF
