La mastoïdite survient en général lorsqu'une otite n'est pas ou mal traitée : l'infection s'étend alors de l'oreille moyenne vers la mastoïde. Elle est l'une des complications les plus courantes de l'otite moyenne aiguë chez les enfants de moins de deux ans. Non traitée, elle peut engendrer de graves conséquences à l'image d’une surdité ou d'une septicémie.
