Modifier les couleurs [...] Pour foncer/obscurcir (obtenir ce qu'on appelle un ton rompu) : ajouter du gris ou du noir réduit la luminosité d'une couleur pure. Pour éteindre/ternir (on dit aussi assourdir) : l'ajout de sa complémentaire dans une couleur, ou de certains pigments de terre comme la terre d'ombre naturelle ou brûlée ternissent la teinte et lui donnent un aspect éteint. Deux complémentaires mélangées à parts égales donnent soit des bruns soit des gris. Pour éclaircir (on dit également «rabattre») : ajouter du blanc.
