La ressemblance avec les coulées de laves croît encore lorsque la nappe d'ignimbrites, déversée sur une pente fortement inclinée, flue à la manière d'une coulée. Il se crée des «rhéo-ignimbrites» ne montrant plus traces d'éclats soudés, mais qui sont au contraire homogènes et où le débit perlitique du verre est fréquent.
