Los gusanos de seda poseen un par de glándulas salivares modificadas, llamadas glándulas de la seda, que emplean para tejer capullos. Las glándulas de la seda segregan un líquido transparente y viscoso que sale a presión por unos orificios, llamados hileras, que hay en las piezas bucales de la larva; el líquido se endurece en contacto con el aire. El diámetro de la hilera determina el grosor del hilo de seda producido.
