The Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy(AHWS) supports a comprehensive approach to reducing family violence in First Nations and Aboriginal communities and improving the health of Aboriginal people who live on or off reserves. The Strategy enables Aboriginal communities to address family violence and health service needs, through the integration of traditional Aboriginal teachings and mainstream health services and interventions. The AHWS is an inter-ministerial initiative, jointly managed by the Ministry of Community and Social Services, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Ontario Native Affairs Secretariat, Ontario Women's Directorate, and 15 Aboriginal organizations and First Nations. The Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres(OFIFC) is a provincial Aboriginal organization representing the collective interests of twenty-seven member Friendship Centres located in towns and cities throughout the province. The Family Life Improvement Program(FLIP) was initiated in 1977 by Native Counselling Services of Alberta. The program originally focused on providing developmental opportunity for Aboriginal families in the Edmonton area, and has since expanded to include numerous additional locations across the province. The core program remains the Edmonton location FLIP, where program development, direction and change evolves from. With its strong family orientation, FLIP is designed to intervene on family problems through emphasis on family interaction, problem solving and the prevention of chronic family disruption. The Aboriginal Head Start On Reserve initiative is designed to prepare young First Nations children for their school years, by meeting their emotional, social, health, nutritional and psychological needs. This initiative encourages the development of projects that are comprised of the following program components : culture and language, education, health promotion, nutrition, social support and parental involvement. The Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research is a collaboration between Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation, a charitable trust established to assist victims of family violence, the University of New Brunswick, community-based organizations and government.
