DEF

A discriminator [used] to minimize time walk errors encountered [thereby] triggering constant rise time and varying amplitude signals.

OBS

In a CFD, the unipolar input signal is turned into a bipolar signal by an appropriate electronic chain. This is done by splitting the input signal with different ratio. One of the signals experiences a certain delay and gets inverted, while the other gets attenuated. Finally both signals are again added to form the CFD bipolar signal.

CONT

CONT

Energy spectroscopy. For energy analysis the output current pulse from a PMT [photomultiplier tube] or from a semiconductor detector is often applied to a charge-sensitive preamplifier. The preamplifier produces a voltage pulse with a peak amplitude that is proportional to the total charge in the current pulse, which is proportional to the energy absorbed from the incident radiation. Amplifiers and filters are used to expand the range of the peak amplitude and to shape the signal from the preamplifier, a process that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio for the system. For energy analysis the peak amplitude of the shaped pulse represents the information of interest. Discriminators and single-channel analyzers(SCA) can be used, following the signal shaping system, to determine the presence of certain energies of detected radiation. A discriminator produces an output logic pulse if it's input signal exceeds a preset threshold level. An SCA produces an output logic pulse if the peak amplitude of it's input signal falls within the energy window that is established with two preset threshold levels.

Total neutron counting accepts all pulses arising from neutron reactions(events) in the sensitive volume of a detector. No attempt is made to isolate events that occur nearly simultaneously as is done in coincidence counting... All detector events producing an amplifier output pulse with an amplitude greater than a threshold set by the integral discriminator are counted for a set time in a scaler.

DEF

A frequency-modulation detector circuit that uses two diodes and requires no limiter at its input; the audio output is determined by the ratio of two developed intermediate-frequency voltages whose relative amplitudes are a function of frequency.

CONT

A ratio detector... is a discriminator operating on the same principle as the Foster-Seely discriminator but less sensitive to amplitude modulation. The coupling circuit and the addition of the primary voltage to the center tap of the secondary may be identical to the corresponding portion of a Foster-Seely discriminator. However, in the ratio detector, the two diodes are connected so that their load voltages are additive rather than subtractive.

DEF

A type of frequency discriminator that converts a frequency-modulated signal into an audio signal. It requires a limiter to prevent random amplitude variations of the FM signal from appearing in its output.

CONT

An improved demodulator, known as a phase-shift or Foster-Seely discriminator... is sensitive to amplitude variations, or modulation, as well as to frequency modulation.... Therefore, a limiter should always precede the discriminator. The limiter removes amplitude variations from the FM signal.
