Subject field(s)
  • Ultrasonography
CONT

In ultrasound, we have the following imaging modes : A-mode or amplitude mode : most simple method that displays the envelope of pulse-echoes versus time. Mostly used in ophthalmology to determine the relative distances between different regions of the eye, and in localization of the brain midline, or myocardium infarction.

CONT

CONT

CVGs [Coriolis vibrating gyroscope] have three features in common : a mechanical resonator, an oscillator and a force-displacement sensor. One mode of the resonator is maintained in resonance by an oscillator loop while oscillations are induced in a second vibration mode. The amplitude of the oscillations gives a signal proportional to the input angular rate. A wide variety of resonators, actuation and sensing schemes are possible. The simplest resonator is a tuning fork.

CONT

... the following characteristics can be those of a rate gyro designed to measure a rate of turn up to 100 DEG per second. The mechanical resonator comprises four beams each having a cross-section of 6 mm by 6 mm, and each 30-35 mm long. The piezo-electric elements are constituted by pellets of PZT having a thickness of a few tenths of a millimeter, metal-coated on both faces, and bonded to the beams.

CONT

DEF

[The] operation of an active device which is biased almost to output-current cut-off so that current flows only during one half of each cycle of sinusoidal input signal, i.e. the angle of flow is 180°.

OBS

[The class-B] mode of operation... is very efficient because the mean current of the active device is directly proportional to the signal amplitude and is almost zero for zero input signal. The output signal is... a reproduction of only one half of each cycle of input signal but linear amplification is possible by using two class-B stages in push-pull operation and most of the output stages in transistor amplifiers and receivers are of this type.

OBS

The theoretical efficiency of a class-B stage (measured by the ratio of the output power to the power taken from the supply) is 78% and efficiencies approaching this value can be obtained in practice.

CONT

DEF

A method in which telecommunication between two stations takes place in one direction at a time.

OBS

In application to the aeronautical mobile service, this method may be subdivided as follows: a) single channel simplex; b) double channel simplex; c) offset frequency simplex.

OBS

simplex: term and definition officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

OBS

In civil aviation, very high frequency(VHF) amplitude modulated(AM) radio is typically used for radio voice communication between personnel in the cockpit and personnel in the air traffic control tower. VHF AM radio utilizes "simplex"(also called "half duplex") mode : i. e. a particular channel is used for both sides of a two-way conversation, and only one party can talk at a time(also known as "two way radio").

OBS

Two definitions have arisen over time: a common definition, which is used as an ANSI [American National Standards Institute] standard and elsewhere, and an ITU-T [International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector] definition. The ITU definition of simplex is termed "half duplex" in other contexts.

OBS

According to ANSI standard, simplex also refers to communication that occurs in one direction only, from one device to the next. In the simplex mode, one of the devices can transmit but cannot receive, or it receives but does not transmit. The half-duplex mode indicates a transmission in either direction, but it can take place in only one direction at a time.

Extended beam modes. Low incidence. High indicence.

OBS

The RADASAT-2 extended functions allow for high-resolution space imagery modes up to three meters as well as a selection of multiple polarisation modes. In the quad-pol mode, the SAR sensor on board RADARSAT-2 is able to measure the amplitude and the backscattered wave phase in all combinations of the antenna linear polarisations-emission and reception(HH, HV, VV AND VH).

OBS

CONT

Polarization modes will enable better discrimination and recognition of objects on the ground and improved classification capability.

CONT

RADARSAT-2 offers three polarimetric modes :(1) selective polarization(dual pol) providing one co-pol channel(HH or VV) and the corresponding cross-pol channel(HV) ;(2) high resolution(3 m) single pol channel(HH or VV or HV) ;and(3) a fully polarimetric mode(quad pol) providing both amplitude and phase. The fully polarimetric mode is significant since RADARSAT-2 is the first commercial satellite to offer this mode.

CONT

PHR

Mode d'imagerie polarimétrique.

DEF

A mode in which the vibration amplitude of the pickoff is nulled by a signal whose amplitude is proportional to the rotation rate about the input axis.

CONT

Integrated Cantilever Beam Tunneling Sensor. Our researchers have exploited the extremely sensitive quantum tunneling effect between metals to design MEMS sensors that can sense a force applied to a silicon-based, surface micromachined structure with extraordinary sensitivity and six orders of magnitude of dynamic range. The force is applied to a micromachined cantilever (one electrode) and is sensed as a result of a tunneling current produced between the cantilever and a tunneling tip (the other electrode). The sensor is operated in a force rebalance mode such that the cantilever and tip do not actually move with respect to each other but are held in a servo-locked state with the voltage required to maintain the servo-lock proportional to the force being sensed by the cantilever.

OBS

Several different types of sensor devices have been designed, fabricated and demonstrated using this concept. These include extremely high dynamic range accelerometers, and high performance microgyroscopes that show the prospect of enabling very compact, inexpensive, precision inertial navigation and inertial measurement systems.

The Positron Microscope was designed and built to be a hybrid instrument capable of performing several types of positrons and electron microscopy. For both electrons and positrons the microscope can be run in one of two modes : magnifying mode in which particles leaving the target are focussed onto a CEMA plate assembly to form a magnified image and scanning mode in which the amplitude of a signal is recorded as a function of the position(and possibly energy) of the incident beam. As an electron microscope the instrument will be able to operate in both magnifying and scanning(SEM) modes. As a positron microscope, however, source considerations will limit its immediate use to magnifying mode, i. e. positron reemission microscopy.
