Record 1 2017-08-31

Subject field(s)
  • Economic History
  • National and International Economics
  • Foreign Trade
DEF

A situation in which gold and currency reserves leave the United States at such a rate that the nation suffers a balance of payments deficit.

OBS

This situation occurred in the late 1950s and prevailed through the 1960s into the mid-1970s, beginning at first with large-scale foreign aid programs following World War II, continuing with heavy military spending abroad, and climaxing with greatly increased direct investments abroad ... As a result, the dollar was overvalued in relation to other currencies-that is, there was an oversupply of dollars and a shortage of foreign currencies-and consequently had to be devalued (as it was in 1971 and 1973).

Key term(s)
  • oversupply of dollars

Domaine(s)
  • Histoire de l'économique

  • Commerce extérieur
CONT

Record 2 2011-10-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Currency and Foreign Exchange
  • Foreign Trade
DEF

The reduction of the value of a national currency in terms of the currency of another nation. Devaluation tends to reduce domestic demand for imports in a country by raising their prices in terms of the devalued currency and to raise foreign demand for the country's exports by reducing their prices in terms of foreign currencies. Devaluation can therefore help to correct a balance of payments deficit and sometimes provide a short-term basis for economic adjustment of a national economy.

OBS

Not to be confused with "depreciation".

OBS

Compare to revaluation (of a currency).

PHR

probability of devaluation.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Politique monétaire et marché des changes
  • Commerce extérieur
DEF

CONT

The operating surplus measures the surplus or deficit accruing from production before taking account of any interest, rent or similar charges payable on financial or tangible non-produced assets borrowed or rented by the enterprise, or any interest, rent or similar receipts receivable on financial or tangible non-produced assets owned by the enterprise; (note: for unincoporated enterprises owned by households, this component is called "mixed income").

CONT

[Governments] generally held program spending below revenues so that their operating balances-that is, the balance before interest payments-were usually in surplus. The operating surplus combined with the effects of low inflation on interest costs meant Canadian governments collectively had virtually no deficit...
