Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A situation in which gold and currency reserves leave the United States at such a rate that the nation suffers a balance of payments deficit. 3, record 1, English, - dollar%20glut
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This situation occurred in the late 1950s and prevailed through the 1960s into the mid-1970s, beginning at first with large-scale foreign aid programs following World War II, continuing with heavy military spending abroad, and climaxing with greatly increased direct investments abroad ... As a result, the dollar was overvalued in relation to other currencies-that is, there was an oversupply of dollars and a shortage of foreign currencies-and consequently had to be devalued (as it was in 1971 and 1973). 3, record 1, English, - dollar%20glut

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 DEF
The reduction of the value of a national currency in terms of the currency of another nation. Devaluation tends to reduce domestic demand for imports in a country by raising their prices in terms of the devalued currency and to raise foreign demand for the country's exports by reducing their prices in terms of foreign currencies. Devaluation can therefore help to correct a balance of payments deficit and sometimes provide a short-term basis for economic adjustment of a national economy. 4, record 2, English, - currency%20devaluation
