Domaine(s)
  • Terres et glaçures (Ind. de la céramique)
OBS

Record 4 1996-06-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Symbols, Motifs and Ornaments (Arts)
  • Clay Working Methods (Ceramics)
DEF

Decoration on ceramic ware applied with a brush.

OBS

It may be executed on biscuit ware before application of the glaze(underglaze colours), or on the surface of the glaze after firing(overglaze, or enamel colours). Very rarely it was executed in cold colours(Kaltmalerei), either oil or lacquer colours, and left without firing. In the case of tin-glazed earthenware, the painting is executed on the raw glaze before firing(when high-temperature colours are used), and the decoration is therefore "in" the glaze, rather than "under" or "over" it.

Record 8 1995-09-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Pottery
DEF

A more or less controlled crazing of glaze for decorative effect: oxides are sometimes rubbed in to enhance the pattern.

CONT

A crackle glaze is one that has been deliberately made to craze by using oxides with high expansion rates in the glaze base. Most often, crazing is considered a fault, but if properly controlled, it can become effective decoration. To accent... crackle... rub a coloring oxide into the craze. By refiring the ware to a slightly higher temperature the dark crackle is sealed into the glaze.
