A circular pattern of air current created by the movement of an airfoil through the air when the airfoil is generating lift. 4, record 5, English, - wing%2Dtip%20vortex
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
As an airfoil moves through the atmosphere in sustained flight, an area of high pressure is created beneath it and an area of low pressure is created above it. The air flowing from the high-pressure area to the low-pressure area around and about the tips of the airfoil tends to roll up into two rapidly rotating vortices, cylindrical in shape. These vortices are the predominant parts of aircraft wake turbulence and their rotational force is dependent upon the wing loading, gross weight, and speed of the generating aircraft. The vortices from medium to heavy aircraft can be of extremely high velocity and hazardous to smaller aircraft. 4, record 5, English, - wing%2Dtip%20vortex

Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
5, record 5, French, - tourbillon%20en%20bout%20d%27aile

in-line inductor: This type of proportioner educts or drafts foam concentrate from a container or tank by venturi action, utilizing the operating pressure of the hose water stream on which it is installed, injecting concentrate into that flow of water. 4, record 6, English, - in%2Dline%20foam%20concentrate%20inducer
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 2 CONT
There are three different types of foam proportioners commonly used in the fire service : line eductors, balanced pressure proportioners, and around-the-pump proportioners. The line eductor is the simplest and least expensive proportioning device. It has no moving parts in the water way, which makes it durable and dependable. The line eductor may be attached to the hoseline or may be part of the nozzle. There are two different types of line eductors : the in-line eductor and the self-educting nozzle. Both types of eductors use the venturi principle to draft foam concentrate into the water stream. As water at high pressure passes over a reduced opening, it creates a low-pressure area near the outlet side of the eductor. This low-pressure area creates a suction effect. The eductor pickup tube is connected to the eductor at this low-pressure point. The pickup tube submerged in the foam concentrate draws concentrate into the water stream, creating a foam water solution. 6, record 6, English, - in%2Dline%20foam%20concentrate%20inducer

The compression tank differs from the expansion tank of the obsolete gravity systems in this characteristic of maintaining system pressure. The compression tank is open only to the system water, whereas the gravity expansion tank was open to atmosphere as well as to the system, and consequently had to be located higher than the highest radiator. The compression tank may be located anywhere, although tank size decreases with increasing height above the boiler. In large systems economy may indicate a high position, rather than in the usual boiler-room area. 6, record 10, English, - expansion%20tank

In the homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM) one assumes that the velocity, temperature and pressure between the phases or components are equal. 1, record 12, English, - homogeneous%20equilibrium%20model
Record number: 12, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This assumption is based on the belief that differences in these three potential variables(and chemical potential if chemical reactions are considered) will promote momentum, energy, and mass transfer between the phases rapidly enough so that equilibrium is reached. For example, when one phase is finely dispersed in another phase generating large interfacial area, under certain circumstances this assumption can be made; e. g., bubbly flow of air in water or steam in water at high pressures. The resulting equations resemble those for a pseudo-fluid with mixture properties and an equation of state which links the phases to obtain these mixture thermodynamic properties. Whenever the HEM model is used it is advisable to check the validity of the equilibrium assumptions by using more accurate theoretical models for comparison. For example, rapid acceleration or pressure changes cannot be always accurately modelled with the HEM model; i. e., discharge of flashing vapor-liquid mixtures, or shock wave propagation through a multiphase medium. This is especially true when the pressure change is large when compared to the ambient pressure, or any of the driving potentials are large relative to their reference values. 1, record 12, English, - homogeneous%20equilibrium%20model

In applying the principles of electrostrictive hydrodynamics(electrohydrodynamics) it is immediately clear to the aeronautical engineer that a large electrode area is required. Just as a sailboat uses a sail, any vehicle utilizing electrohydrodynamic propulsion must employ a large ballistic electrode to integrate the pressure of plasma "winds" to provide lift or forward thrust. These so-called "electric winds" are ion flows, moving at relatively high velocity. The flows may take various patterns determined by 1) The manner in which the flows are generated, and 2) The curvature of the surfaces which confine them. 1, record 20, English, - electrohydrodynamic%20propulsion

A rocket engine is a device in which propellants are burned in a combustion chamber and the resulting high pressure gases are expanded through a specially shaped nozzle to produce thrust. The function of the nozzle is to convert the chemical-thermal energy generated in the combustion chamber into kinetic energy. The nozzle converts the slow moving, high pressure, high temperature gas in the combustion chamber into high velocity gas of lower pressure and temperature. Gas velocities from 2 to 4. 5 kilometers per second can be obtained in rocket nozzles. The nozzles which perform this feat are called DeLaval nozzles(after the inventor) and consist of a convergent and divergent section. The minimum flow area between the convergent and divergent section is called the nozzle throat. The flow area at the end of the divergent section is called the nozzle exit area. 6, record 24, English, - divergent%20exit%20cone

1, record 26, English, - line%20eductor

Foam Concentrate Proportioners. In order that a predetermined volume of liquid foam concentrate may be taken from its source and placed into a water stream to form a foam solution of fixed concentration, the following two general method classifications are made: 1. Waves are formed due to the friction of the wind over the water surface. The three main components for wave generation are the wind speed, it's duration and fetch.... How to recognise a swell/wave generating area. On a weather chart there are high and low pressure systems. They are separated by isobars(lines joining places of equal pressure). Buys Ballot's law states :"If you stand with your back to the wind in the northern hemisphere, the low pressure will be on your left. "From this you can deduce the wind flows anticlockwise around a low pressure system and almost parallel to the isobars. The wind near the surface actually flows at an angle of about 15 degrees to the isobars pointing in to the low. The reason for this is that friction with the surface slows the air down and it is this friction which causes waves to form. Assuming you have identified an area of closely packed isobars which are almost straight for 200 miles and the low system is not changing to quickly, you have found a good swell generating area. 3, record 27, English, - wave%20generation%20area

The prevailing winds in Sydney area are a combination of synoptic(pressure driven) flows and meso-scale(local) flows. The synoptic conditions are dominated by high pressure systems, moving air in a clockwise direction across Australia, from west to east, with an average period of six to seven days. In summer these high pressure systems are located to the south of Sydney, resulting in onshore synoptic winds. In winter these synoptic pressure systems shift north, following the movement of the sun to the northern hemisphere, resulting in westerly synoptic winds. 1, record 30, French, - palette%20de%20mousse%20structur%C3%A9e

Record number: 31, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This redistribution is accomplished by the three-dimensional motion associated with the atmospheric circulation. The trajectory of the centre is often altered by local heating or cooling of the air column, usually as a result of thermal fluxes at the surface. These fluxes change the temperature of the air near the surface resulting in density changes which modify surface pressures. 1, record 31, English, - anticyclone%20movement

The process of through-drying... Essentially, a hot, unsaturated gas is passed through a wet, porous material(e. g., the tissue web) by imposing a pressure differential across the material. As the hot gas passes through, heat is transferred to evaporate the water, and the gas leaves at a reduced temperature and with increased water vapor content. The intimate contact between the hot gas and the web, coupled with the large internal surface area of the porous material, produces exceptionally high drying rates. 1, record 32, English, - through%2Ddryer

1, record 32, French, - s%C3%A9cheur%20%C3%A0%20air%20traversant

Conventional safety-valves have the advantages that the lifting pressure can be varied at will and set precisely, and that they will re-seat when the pressure has fallen sufficiently; but they have the disadvantages of high cost and of the difficulty of maintaining an absolutely tight seal. In geothermal conditions this may result in the precipitation of dissolved solids in the area around the seatings, which could necessitate increased maintenance and sometimes even prevent the valve from discharging its full rated output. 1, record 35, English, - geothermal%20condition
