Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
CONT

In the most common type of high temperature reactor(HTR) fuel, tiny particles of nuclear fuel are coated with three or four layers of coatings which are impenetrable to fission products up to a temperature of 2000 celsius. About 20, 000 particles, bonded with graphite are massed together to form a spherical fuel element with a diameter of about 6 centimeters. The high temperature reactor... might contain 100, 000 or more of these fuel elements.

CONT

The pebbles are ... designed to passively limit the amount of heat unleashed by the nuclear fission reactions that drive the reactor. The fissionable material is divided into groups of 100 million billion uranium-235 atoms scattered within a 0.5 mm sphere of uranium dioxide. That core is coated with four containment layers. ... Some 15,000 carbon-coated uranium dioxide kernels, looking like nuclear poppy seeds, are embedded in a tennis ball-size graphite and resin matrix. Graphite acts to slow the fission neutrons and so acts as an embedded moderator. The matrix is then encased in a 5 mm pure carbon shell, sintered, annealed, and machined to a uniform diameter of 6 cm.

CONT

CONT

Gas-cooled reactor systems. The high-temperature reactor(HTR) uses particle fuel able to withstand high temperatures, allowing for very high burn-up and graphite as a moderator. Helium is used as a coolant, allowing an output temperature of more than 850°C.

CONT

OBS

High Temperature Reactor(HTR). A nuclear reactor moderated by graphite and cooled by gas(helium). Can be refuelled without shut down(on load refuelling-OLR). The high temperature of the coolant results in a better thermodynamic efficiency.

CONT

The coated particle fuels have been designed in the past for "high temperature reactors"(HTR). The interesting aspects of such fuel are :(i) the good thermal exchange between the gas coolant and the fuel as a result of the small fuel particles, and(ii) the retention of the fission products within the particle as a result of the tight coatings surrounding the fissile kernel flux conditions.

CONT

The ABR is the ratio of successful calls to total originating international calls. The ratio is the measure of effective international calls, reflects the performance of the total international network between the calling and called country and hence is the CCR for the entire international network or the probability of a call being successful.

CONT

Part of the improved performance of automatic controls can be derived from the ability to distinguish between destinations that are easy-to-reach(ETR) and destinations that are hard-to-reach(HTR), i. e., destinations with a low answer bid ratio, and applying heavier controls to HTR destinations.
