ORBIT CORRECTION [5 records]

Record 1 2023-02-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
CONT

GOES-9, a three axis stabilized spacecraft, remains stationary in space which allows the [imager and sounder] instruments to be continuously pointed at the earth. The scanning system moves back and forth(i. e., east to west and then west to east) as it moves north to south. While the spacecraft is stationary, it is not absolutely still. Earth location and registration accuracy are [affected] by orbital motions, instrument motion, and thermal distortion. A complicated set of navigation(earth location) and registration(image-to-image location of a landmark) correction schemes are necessary to compensate for these effects.... The registration schemes briefly are : 1) image motion compensation(IMC) and 2) mirror motion compensation(MMC). The IMC removes spacecraft orbit and attitude motion from each image. The MMC automatically corrects for the predictable effects of the instrument mirror motions.

DEF

An orbit correction consisting in an increase of the mean altitude of an artificial satellite.

CONT

Following the initial orbit raising attempt, the Terra team developed a revised plan with eight maneuvers required to raise Terra’s orbit. Each maneuver was performed as planned.

CONT

Many spacecraft use small rockets called thrusters to move around in space. Thrusters can change the speed and direction of a spacecraft. They allow a spacecraft to steer in space, to jump to a higher orbit, or to fall back to Earth.

CONT

The control rocket is a vernier or other rocket used to control the attitude of, or slightly change the speed of, a spacecraft.

CONT

The propulsion subsystem featured sets of small thrusters and a main engine. The thrusters were used to perform Odyssey's attitude control and trajectory correction manoeuvres, while the main engine was used to place the spacecraft in orbit around Mars. The main engine, which used hydrazine propellant with nitrogen tetroxide as an oxidiser, produced a minimum thrust of 65. 3 kilograms of force. Each of the four thrusters used for attitude control produce a thrust of 0. 1 kilogram of force. Four 2. 3-kilogram-force thrusters were used for turning the spacecraft. In addition to miscellaneous tubing, pyro valves and filters, the propulsion subsystem also included a single gaseous helium tank used to pressurise the fuel and oxidiser tanks. The propulsion subsystem weighed 49. 7 kilograms.

CONT

The Attitude and Vernier Upper Module. The Vega launch vehicle is equipped with a liquid propulsion module(AVUM), which provides roll control and pitch, yaw, and axial thrust during the final phase of flight. It shall perform the following functions :-roll control;-attitude control during coasting flight and in orbit phase;-correction of axial velocity error due to solid rocket motor performance scatter;-generation of the required velocity change for orbit circularisation(as required) ;-satellite pointing;-satellite release manoeuvres;-empty stage de-orbiting.
