For example, a laser altimeter can measure height from a spacecraft to an icesheet. That measurement, coupled with radial orbit knowledge, will enable determination of the topography.

There are different types of altimeters: (a) the pressure or barometric altimeter, which gives an approximate measure of altitude from a pressure measurement and an assumed standard temperature distribution; (b) the radio altimeter, which deduces altitude by electronic techniques. (c) the radar altimeter, which measures vertical distances to the surface below using radar technology.

La performance de pointage du satellite a pu être évaluée grâce à une campagne dédiée de manœuvres en attitude explorant la gamme de conditions d'ensoleillement, très variables, rencontrées par le satellite : l'antenne de l'altimètre est pointée au nadir avec une erreur maximale de 0,1º. Cette valeur est de plus confirmée par les estimations fournies par les mesures de l'altimètre, et est à comparer à l'exigence de 0,2º nécessaire pour obtenir des mesures altimétriques de bonne qualité.

The Intelligent Fire Detection Infrared Sensor(FOCUS) will detect, from the ISS orbit, and analyse high-temperature events such as vegetation fires and volcanic eruptions. Large forest and savannah fires, as well as volcanic activities, have global atmospheric consequences(e. g. greenhouse effect, cloud generation, climate change) and the measurements onboard the Station will contribute to the classification, atmospheric composition determination and geocoding of the data, which will be transmitted to a worldwide scientific, application-oriented and pre-operational user community.

During the entire ERS-1 mission the Delft Institute for Earth-Oriented Space Research(DEOS) has shown that in the orbit determination, significant advances could be made by successive improvement of the modelling of the orbit dynamics(gravity field and surface forces) and inclusion of altimetry as a tracking data type. Starting at radial orbit errors of around 140 cm in 1991, the best available orbits are now believed to be accurate up to about 5 cm.

The ROCSAT3/COSMIC(Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate) mission consists of a constellation of 6 low-earth orbiting satellites. In conducting the atmospheric limb sounding using the GPS radio occultation technique(which is the main objective of the mission), the satellite orbits are precisely determined at any given moment by GPS "high-low" satellite-to-satellite tracking. These precise orbit determination(POD) data contain useful information about the Earth's gravitational field and its time variations, for both geophysical and climate-related research.
