A hallucinogenic beverage brewed from various species of the tropical liana "Banisteriopsis" ... by the Chama Indians [who] take it ... in the hope that their visions will foretell the future, and for pleasure.

The Indians prepare a hallucinogenic drink, variously known as ayahuasca, caapi, yajé, pindé or natém, from the bark of Banisteriopsis caapi, "the vine of the soul, "a forest liana that tends to grow in charming double helixes.... One effect of ayahuasca is to overstimulate brain functions that depend on the neurotransmitter serotonin, a biochemical process that can become manifest as a hallucination.
