Il semble que le terme «activité spécifique» ait fait l'objet de critiques de la part de certains auteurs et que les organismes de normalisation comme l'ISO et la CEI (Commission électrotechnique internationale) aient tenté d'imposer l'emploi de «activité massique». Toutefois, le terme «activité spécifique» paraît vouloir s'ancrer malgré tout dans l'usage. On le retrouve dans le Règlement sur l'emballage et le transport des substances nucléaires (révisé janvier 2000).
