CONT

There tend to be a number of general perceptions about women who use transition homes, for example, that they only come from certain neighbourhoods or socio-economic groups or that they are not able to cope with situations(implication that they should be able). However it is probably equally fair to say that women who do not leave an abusive situation are perhaps even more severely criticized than is the perpetrator of the abuse. This double bind community pressure towards women often tends to increase the anxiety in either situation.

Video produced in 1993 by Kinetic Inc., Toronto, Ontario. This video, which is related to Seen... But Not Heard, examines the importance of group therapy and counselling for children who have witnessed their mothers being abused. Dramatic scenes of family life in an abusive situation and of group therapy sessions show why the children need to talk about their problems, fears and anger. The film shows the development of inappropriate behaviour, and how counselling can help children cope with and talk about their experiences, learn better methods to deal with anger and fear, and how to plan escapes from future violent situations.
