African, Caribbean and Pacific Island states that have established agreements with the European Community on economic and trade cooperation. Former colonies Common market members that therefore receive preferential treatment. After becoming independent, the new states decided to continue their association with the EEC. After the entry of the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark, a new agreement was signed with the ACP, representing 65 African Caribbean and Pacific island states on 28th February 1975 in Lomé, Togo.

ECCAS was established on 18 October 1983 by the UDEAC members and the members of the Economic Community of the Great Lakes States(CEPGL)(Burundi, Rwanda and the then Zaire) as well as Sao Tome and Principe. ECCAS began operations in 1985, but has been inactive since 1992, mainly due to the non-payment of membership fees by the member states. ECCAS aims to promote regional economic co-operation and establish a Central African Common Market.
