CENTERLINE STAKE [7 records]

Record 1 2000-08-24

DEF

Stake used in setting out to indicate the edge of a pavement, the shoulder line, the top and toe of banks, etc., and recording the distance from the centre line and the amount of cut or fill required.

CONT

As soon as work is started on a cut or fill section, centerline stakes may be destroyed by equipment and many of the slope stakes will be removed. In order to eliminate resurveying of portions of the road to relocate these stakes, offset stakes are placed beyond the limits of construction and are used to relocate the original stakes. Offset stakes are set on a line at right angles to the centerline of the facility. From these, the slope/stakes can easily be located. After relocating a slope stake, the centerline stake can be relocated by measuring toward the centerline of the road the horizontal distance indicated on the slope stake and placing the new centerline stake there; Placement and marking. An offset stake will contain all the info given on the original slope stake plus the horizontal distance from the original slope stake to the offset stake. This offset distance is marked on the front of the stake and is circled to indicate that it is an offset reference. If the off-set stake is at a different elevation than the slope stake, then the cut or fill value will be increased or decreased by the difference in elevation. An offset stake placed a horizontal distance of 6 M and 0. 3 M above the right slope stake mentioned above would be placed and marked....

DEF

CONT

CONT

Centerline or alignment stakes (hub stakes) are placed on the centerline of a road or airfield to indicate its alignment, location, and direction. They are the first stakes placed and are located accurately because they are used as reference points in locating the remaining stakes. Centerline stakes are usually placed at 30 M intervals. On rough ground or on sharp horizontal and vertical curves, the stakes are placed closer together, i.e. 20 M.

CONT

CULVERT STAKES-Culvert stakes are located on a line parallel to and offset a few feet from the centerline. The info required on the culvert stake is : the distance from the stake to the centerline, vertical distance to the culvert, and the station. Once the survey crew has finished staking out the culvert, the construction foreman can place the pipe accurately and correctly by using batter boards.

OBS

culvert: Pipe or channel to carry water under a roadway or other obstruction. It is either a short bridge of less than 6 m (20 ft) in length, or a structure with enough fill over it so that little of its strength is needed to support the traffic load.

CONT

Placement and Marking-Shoulder stakes are set with the broad side of the stake facing the centerline. On the front of the stake is marked the amount of cut or fill at the location in relation to the finished grade at the outside edge of the shoulder. For convenience in checking elevations as work progresses, this stake may be set in such a manner that the top of the stake is at grade, or it may be left high and the amount of cut or fill noted from a keel(coloured marking crayon) mark on the stake. Underneath the cut of fill figure, the horizontal distance from the stake to the centerline is placed.... The keel mark is identified by the inverted V.

CONT

Placement and Marking - These [rough grade] stakes are generally left high, with a keel mark and the amount of cut or fill from keel mark to finished grade marked on the front side.

CONT

Shoulder stakes are set on the outside edge of the shoulder at right angles to the centerline opposite each centerline stake. Since they are placed at a constant distance from the centerline of the particular facility, they can be easily set using the centerline stakes as reference points. These stakes are usually omitted on roads except where close control of the road width is required, such as in rock excavation, approaches to bridges, tunnels, and the like....

CONT

Rough grade stakes are placed on the centerline, shoulders, intermediate lines(as in airfield layout), or along the slope lines after grading has begun. They are placed during construction to substitute for the regular types of construction stakes. Placement and Marking-These stakes are generally left high, with a keel mark and the amount of cut or fill from keel mark to finished grade marked on the front side. The station number is marked on the stake.

DEF

stake marking the line where a cut or fill meets the original grade.

CONT

Slope stakes are set on lines perpendicular to the centerline(one on each side), at the points where the cut and fill slopes intersect the natural ground surface. The sloping of the slope stakes outward allows the eqpt to work to the stake without removing it, indicates the direction of the centerline of the road, and enables the eqpt operators to read the stakes more easily. Slope stakes are placed at 30 M intervals on tangents and at 20 M intervals on horizontal or vertical curves. Wherever a sharp break in the original ground profile occurs, it should also be staked.

CONT

The slope stake indicates the lateral limits of cut or fill at a given cross section.
