The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002, the cities of Boucher... 2, record 38, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

The Aboriginal Summer Student Program was a joint effort of the Canadian Forest Service(CFS) and Corporate Services Sector of Natural Resources Canada. It was designed to provide Aboriginal students with practical, meaningful and challenging summer employment that would expose them to the work accomplished throughout the CFS. The program provided Natural Resources Canada with a valuable opportunity to strengthen the department's relationship with the Aboriginal community. It not only benefited the students by providing them with practical and challenging employment; it also helped managers increase their awareness and appreciation of the needs, abilities and culture of Aboriginal peoples. As such, the real success of this program was in uniting the Aboriginal community and the forest community at the local level, and in highlighting the scientific aspects of forestry. 1, record 54, English, - Aboriginal%20Summer%20Student%20Program

1, record 54, French, - Programme%20d%27emploi%20d%27%C3%A9t%C3%A9%20pour%20%C3%A9tudiants%20autochtones

Festival by the Sea originated as the cultural component of the Canada Games in 1985. This event included many fine facilities devoted to the athletes but perhaps more importantly, created an environment where people came to believe and expect that Saint John could produce and support excellence. Begun in 1995 by the National Capital Commission(NCC) under the general name of the Family Exchange Program, the objectives of the Celebrate Canada in the Capitals program are to foster a feeling of pride in Canada and to encourage Canadians to explore the rich culture and heritage of their country. In the beginning, the program enabled one randomly chosen family from each province and territory to visit Canada's Capital Region for five days during Winterlude, and twelve other families to travel to the Capital for Canada Day. During their stay, the winners were billeted with host families in the region, which added a friendly dimension to the program while giving participants a more connected exchange experience. 1, record 71, English, - Celebrate%20Canada%20in%20the%20Capitals

1, record 71, French, - F%C3%AAtons%20le%20Canada%20dans%20les%20capitales

Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. This paper discusses the tension between risk taking and innovation, and the impact of values and organizational culture on both. The paper deals with five different types of innovation. It addresses the question of reasonable risk taking in which managers need to engage in order to make their organizations more innovative, and to sustain that innovation. It then explores the extent to which public service culture, values and rules influence risk-taking and thereby innovation. The paper concludes with suggested steps that can be taken to develop guidance for risk management and thereby fostering a culture of continuous innovation. 1, record 72, English, - Risk%2C%20Innovation%20and%20Values%20%2D%20Examining%20the%20Tensions

1, record 72, French, - Risque%2C%20innovation%20et%20valeurs%20%2D%20examen%20des%20tensions

Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. This guide presents a step-by-step approach to managing change, one that deputies/heads and their executive teams can follow when undertaking management reforms. The pursuit of management excellence has many labels-reform, renewal, modernization, transformation, re-alignment-but all are about changing the behaviours that characterize Public Service management culture. For purposes of illustration this guide focuses on Modern Comptrollership, but it is generic in nature and its approach can be applied to any effort to change management culture. 1, record 73, English, - Changing%20Management%20Culture%3A%20Models%20and%20Strategies%20to%20Make%20It%20Happen

1, record 73, French, - Changer%20la%20culture%20de%20gestion%20%3A%20mod%C3%A8les%20et%20strat%C3%A9gies%20pour%20r%C3%A9aliser%20cet%20objectif
