5, record 1, French, - cong%C3%A9lateur%20de%20laboratoire%20%C3%A0%20%2D80%20%C2%B0C

The spinner flask feature a bulb-shape glass impeller that rotates from a fixed position at the center of the flask, which provides a slow and gentle orbital movement for the suspension culture. There are many instances in a cell or tissue culture laboratory when the investigator is faced with the need to purify a single type of cell from a primary culture or cell line. In the case of a primary culture of tissue, for example, the heterogeneity in such a culture clearly requires cloning if one wants to study a cell comprising only a subset of the many types in the culture. 1, record 27, French, - %26oelig%3Bd%C3%A8me%20de%20la%20face

Prostate cancer is androgen-dependent initially, making it vulnerable to androgen ablation and anti-androgen therapies. However, prostate cancer cells gradually lose androgen dependency and tumor cells which are resistant to endocrine therapy ultimately proliferate. While loss of AR [androgen receptor] expression may accompany loss of androgen dependency, other cellular events may allow cell proliferation to bypass the androgen requirement. We have found that certain androgen-dependent human prostatic cancer cells can, in androgen-depleted culture media, progress to cancer cells which proliferate rapidly without androgen but are proliferatively repress by low concentrations of androgens. 2, record 38, English, - androgen%2Ddependent

Although the innervating central neurons are not present in the cell culture, we are able to mimic their excitatory effect on the ganglionic neurons... The Clinostat has been used by biologists for over a hundred years to study how organisms might adapt to the microgravity environment and what effects the force of gravity has on plant and animal development and behavior. The clinostat is a simple device which places a plant, a small organism, or cell growing in culture on a rotating platform. The rotation causes the biosystem under test to be subjected to the gravity vector from "all" directions. From the system's point of view, the rotation cancels the gravity vector by continuous averaging thus approximating the highly reduced vector found in the actual space environment. 3, record 41, English, - clinostat

The Biorack integrates several scientific facilities in a single rack - highly desirable given the limited room available onboard a spaceflight. The Biotechnology Mammalian Tissue Culture facility has been conceived for research on cell and tissue culture. It will be essential in furthering our understanding of the influence of the cell microenvironment on growth and differentiation. The core of the system will provide robust control of concentration gradients and of mechanical forces thanks to the integration of fluid distribution tools, microsensors, and microactuators. The emphasis is put on the mimicking of organotypical conditions and on the acquisition of data to be used for guided tissue development and differentiation in both space and terrestrial conditions. In addition to this core cultivation subunit, a powerful diagnostics subunit allows for dedicated tools adapted to the tissue undergoing testing. The whole concept is modular in order to support upgrading and adaptation to the requirements of the experimental programme. 1, record 44, English, - biotechnology%20mammalian%20tissue%20culture%20facility

1, record 57, French, - pi%C3%A9geage%20optique

Dr. Waite has characterized a mussel adhesive protein(MAP) that contains highly basic peptides, a DOPA residue and hydroxy prolines. Since there is commercial interest in MAP as a bioadhesive for cells and tissues several academic and commercial laboratories have cloned its DNA sequence. Collaborative Research(Waltham, MA) has extracted the compound(Mytilus edulis foot protein) from mussels and is selling it as CELL TAK, which has been used as a cell and tissue culture attachment factor. 3, record 58, English, - Mytilus%20edulis%20foot%20protein
