The transducer of any hygrometer; i.e., that part of a hygrometer that quantitatively "senses" atmospheric water vapor.

In the torsion hygrometer, the rotation of the hygrometric element is a function of the humidity. Such hygrometers are constructed by taking a substance whose length is a function of the humidity and twisting or spiralling it under tension in such a manner that a change in length will cause a further rotation of the element.

The moisture content that is reached in a soil in a particular environment after moisture movements have ceased.

Climate has a great influence on soil moisture conditions. The engineering behaviour of soils is governed in large measure by their moisture contents. Most clay subsoils exist in an approximate state of moisture equilibrium that may be seriously disrupted by construction drainage or irrigation. Lawn watering in urban area can have results equivalent to a substantial increase in rainfall ... This practice often results in a marked increase in subsoil moisture and volume and brings about new problems for shallow foundations.

[...] Trois types de mesure sont couramment utilisés : - par extraction de l'eau sous pression [...] - par équilibre hygroscopique : au contact de l'air, un échantillon du sol humide se dessèche jusqu'à ce que soit atteint un certain équilibre. Le potentiel matriciel en mégapascal est alors égal à 1,064 Tlog U (U représentant l'humidité relative de l'air et T la température absolue). Il suffit donc, après équilibre, de déterminer l'humidité de l'échantillon pour obtenir un point de la courbe reliant le potentiel à l'humidité. Cette méthode est applicable à la gamme allant d'environ - 5 à - 1 000 mégapascals. - par tensiométrie.

The corresponding ratios of specific humidity or of mixing ratio give approximations of sufficient accuracy for many purposes in meteorology. The relative humidity is usually expressed in per cent, and can be computed from psychometric data. The ratio of mixing ratio to saturation mixing ratio was preferred as a definition of relative humidity by the International Meteorological Organization.

"Relative humidity" is defined in a very distinctive way in those instances where the "relative humidity of moist air with respect to ice" or "with respect to water" is being referred to.

Le facteur A peut être trouvé empiriquement pour chaque type donné de psychromètre. La valeur numérique de A dépend des propriétés des thermomètres et de la vitesse de l'air ventilant les réservoirs.
