DEF

Type of electrical hygrometer using a humidity strip or electrolytic strip element.

CONT

The electrolytic hygrometer consists of a flat plastic strip bounded by electrodes on two sides and coated with a hygroscopic chemical compound such as lithium chloride. The electrical resistance of this coating is a function of the amount of moisture absorbed from the atmosphere and the temperature of the strip.

DEF

A type of hygrometer with which the water vapor content of the atmosphere is measured by means of the absorption of vapor by a hygroscopic chemical. The amount of vapor absorbed may be determined in an absolute manner by weighing the hygroscopic material, or in a non-absolute manner by measuring a physical property of the substance that varies with the amount of water vapor absorbed.

DEF

CONT

Hygroscopic substances exhibit a chemical attraction for water, which encourages condensation of water vapour on them in preference to other substances. This same attraction is capable of causing condensation in an atmosphere which is not saturated. It appears that hygroscopic substances possess in general more satisfactory qualities as nuclei than do non-hygroscopic substances.

CONT
