Health status improves with level of education. Education is closely tied to socioeconomic status, and effective education for children and lifelong learning for adults are key contributors to health and prosperity for individuals, and for the country. Education contributes to health and prosperity by equipping people with knowledge and skills for problem solving, and helps provide a sense of control and mastery over life circumstances. It increases opportunities for job and income security, and job satisfaction. And it improves people's ability to access and understand information to help keep them healthy.

A Socratic tutor theoretically need not know all the answers beforehand, but must be able to guide a student's own exploration. The role of guide as opposed to that of provider of information requires a mastery of principles about using and acquiring knowledge rather than a mastery of specific facts. Existing systems that implement Socratic tutoring do not follow such ideal versions of the method, which would require an understanding of reasoning processes and a perception of the student's approach far beyond the capabilities of current student modeling systems. True Socratic tutoring requires the ability to "learn along" with the student, and such powerful learning models are not yet available for nontrivial domains.

CONT

Socratic teaching forces students to deal with counterexamples and deal with contradictions. Unlike didactic instruction, in Socratic instruction it is the student who forges the conceptual system. The Socratic teacher is aggressive and adversarial.

CONT

Mastery learning is a proven, effective approach to training employed by preservice education schools and inservice training institutions in over 35 countries. It can be applied to virtually any type of skills training. It is considered a very effective approach for developing competency in a clinical skill, because it is learner-centered rather than trainer or teacher-driven. It also acknowledges that individuals vary in the way they learn and accommodates different learning styles by using a variety of learning strategies.

DEF

An assessment method of the reliability of incoming data based on information derived from the contents of the knowledge state, and on the assumption that the acquisition of new pieces of knowledge follows natural links connecting them to existing knowledge. The locus of learning is predicted by the frontier of the student's knowledge as defined on the network of these genetic links. In the student model, the confidence in the mastery of each piece of knowledge can be assessed not only on the basis of data extracted from behavior, but also in terms of the number and nature of genetic connections with other parts of the curriculum that have been made explicit by instruction.

Fischer, Brown, and Burton(1978; Burton, Brown, and Fischer, 1984) propose a paradigm for the design of optimal learning environments, which they call increasingly complex microworlds. The concept of microworlds created for educational purposes with the computer as a(universal simulator) is already the central theme of LOGO. Fischer et al. set out to formalize the notion of a succession of(microworlds) where the modifications at each step are meant to support learning. The idea is to start with a simplified world and to have a coach progressively add new dimensions of complexity that require an increasing mastery of basic skills. Fischer et al. present skiing instruction as a pedagogical success model that has made use of microworlds. Over the years, skiing instruction has become safer and surprisingly effective. According to the authors, the key to this success is the definition of progressive learning phases : instructors have combined technological advances with pedagogical cleverness to provide useful simplified versions of the skill.
