The Train to Win stage(females 18+, males 19+) is the final stage of the LTAD [Long-Term Athlete Development] high-performance stream. Medals and podium performances are the primary focus. In the Train to Win stage of LTAD, athletes with identified talent pursue high-intensity training to win international events. They are now full-time athletes. The previous LTAD stages have developed and optimized the skills, tactics, and ancillary capacities of each athlete. Athletes have now realized their full genetic potential. They must now train to maximize and maintain their competitive performance at the highest level. At the Train to Win stage, world-class athletes with or without disabilities require world-class training methods, equipment, and facilities that meet the demands of the sport and the athlete.

There are seven stages within the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, each of them covering a different age span for boys and girls. They are as follows: Active Start, FUNdamental, Learn to Train, Train to Train, Train to Compete, Train to Win and Active for Life.

The title "Training to Win" was used in the Report of the Minister of State’s (Sport) Work Group on Sport for Persons with a Disability (Final Report - July 13, 2004) and in the Sport Canada Glossary.

Le stade S'entraîner à gagner est le dernier stade de [DLTP/A Développement à long terme du participant/athlète] en haute performance. On se concentre principalement sur les médailles et le podium. Au stade S'entraîner à gagner, les athlètes qui se sont démarqués par leur talent poursuivent l'entraînement de haute performance dans le but de remporter des événements internationaux. Ils sont maintenant des athlètes à temps plein. Les stades de [DLTP/A] précédents ont permis de développer et d'optimiser les habiletés, les tactiques et les capacités auxiliaires de chaque athlète. Les athlètes ont atteint leur plein potentiel génétique. Ils doivent maintenant s'entraîner pour maximiser et maintenir leur performance compétitive au plus haut niveau. Au stade S'entraîner à gagner, les athlètes de classe mondiale ayant ou non un handicap ont besoin de méthodes d'entraînement, d'équipement et d'installations qui répondent aux besoins du sport et de l'athlète.

Le [Développement à long terme du participant/athlète (DLTP/A)] est constitué de sept stades, chaque stade couvrant une période d'âge différente pour les garçons ou les filles. Les stades sont : Enfant actif, S'amuser grâce au sport, Apprendre à s'entraîner, S'entraîner à s'entraîner, S'entraîner à la compétition, S'entraîner à gagner et le dernier stade est Vie active.

Le titre «S'entraîner pour gagner» a été utilisé dans le «Rapport du groupe de travail du ministre d'État (sport) sur le sport pour les personnes handicapées» publié en 2004. La «Politique sur le sport pour les personnes ayant un handicap» a été publiée en 2006 et utilise le titre «S'entraîner à gagner».

A Canadian Sport Review Panel, comprised of sport technical experts, will assess the quality and additional needs of the high performance programs of all funding partner clients, with a focus on Olympic/Paralympic sports. The Panel will provide recommendations to the Government of Canada and other national funding partners on the amount and priority areas for the allocation of funding required to support Olympic/Paralympic high performance programs. The Panel will identify the sports with the greatest potential to achieve podium success at Olympic and Paralympic Games. This will assist the Government of Canada and other funding partners in targeting excellence funding. The Panel will also add value to Canada's high performance system by making recommendations on other improvements required on both a sport-specific and system-wide level.
