Il existe [...] une relation entre l'augmentation du temps de réverbération et l'augmentation du niveau sonore réverbéré car les deux valeurs dépendent de la quantité totale de matériaux absorbants dans la salle. Ainsi, lorsqu'on tente d'amoindrir les niveaux du champ réverbéré en ajoutant un matériau absorbant, on réduit simultanément les temps de réverbération. Dans les salles prévues pour écouter (et surtout dans les locaux utilisés pour écouter de la musique), il convient de rechercher un temps de réverbération optimal. Lorsqu'il y a trop de réverbération, le mot se fond dans le suivant, ce qui récuit l'intelligibilité du discours.
