Barley is also used to produce barley malt. In this case the whole barley seed is steeped in water to allow the live germ to sprout... The sprouted barley is next dried under mild heat so as not to inactivate its enzymes. The sprouted dried barley, now known as malt, is used in the brewing industry to help digest starchy material into sugars for rapid yeast fermentation. The malt also has a distinctive flavor which contributes to the flavor of brewed beverages such as beer. Malt further adds flavor to breakfast cereals and malted-milk concentrates. Malt syrups also find use in various bakery operations where amylase activity is desired. 4, record 3, English, - barley%20malt

The economy exists entirely within society, because all parts of the human economy require interaction among people. However, society is much more than just the economy. Friends and families, music and art, religion and ethics are important elements of society, but are not primarily based on exchanging goods and services. Society, in turn, exists entirely within the environment. Our basic requirements--air, food and water--come from the environment, as do the energy and raw materials for housing, transportation and the products we depend on. Finally, the environment surrounds society. At an earlier point in human history, the environment largely determined the shape of society. Today the opposite is true : human activity is reshaping the environment at an ever-increasing rate. The parts of the environment unaffected by human activity are getting smaller all the time. 2, record 11, English, - human%20economy

4, record 11, French, - %C3%A9conomie%20humaine

In flotation technology activation is the development on the surface of a designated mineral of selective reaction, usually attraction into the air-water interface. This renders the activated particle more eager to be drawn into a coursing bubble, rise and persist as part of a selectively mineralised froth. To induce such changes reagents called "activators" are used. Other chemicals, used to work to the opposite purpose are called "wetting agents" or "depressants." Both types are surface-active agents or surfactants, capable of influencing conditions in the air-water-solid triphase. 7, record 15, English, - surface%20active%20agent

Observations indicate that most natural dry snow slab avalanches release during storms as a result of rapid loading from snowfall... Observations also indicate that avalanche activity usually increases within a few minutes of the onset of rain-on-snow. These avalanches typically release as slabs several hours before liquid water has penetrated to the sliding layer... The mechanism of release of these immediate-type avalanches has been a puzzle; it is not clear how the snow at the shear plane at depth knows that it is raining at the surface... these avalanches release much sooner than would be expected if loading and/or lubrication caused the failure. 1, record 26, English, - immediate%2Dtype%20avalanche

In recent years studies of enzyme conformational changes have become highly sophisticated. By a variety of physical techniques they have revealed the great complexity of response of enzymes to small molecules.... One method uses ultrasonics to study the pH induced conformational transition in the active centers of the enzymes. The method utilizes the observation that ultrasonic cavitation produces hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl free radicals in water solution. Penetration of these radicals into the enzyme active center results in enzyme inactivation due to destruction of certain functional groups important for the catalytic activity, typically tryptophan residues.... Thus, a kinetic study of the enzyme ultrasonic inactivation allows us to determine the parameters associated with the conformational changes in the enzyme active center. 2, record 38, English, - conformational%20transition

1, record 38, French, - changement%20de%20conformation

A... rare form of ferric clogging due to the presence of certain bacteria in geotextile-wrapped drains, has been reported... These bacteria may be subdivided into two groups, one of which oxidizes dissolved iron in the drain water to form a precipitate, and the other of which acts on dissolved organic matter in the drain water, to release iron which may then be oxidized. The result of this bacterial activity is a deposit of bacterial gel containing rusty layers in the drain core. 1, record 42, English, - ferric%20clogging

[A] significant adsorptive characteristic is possessed not alone by carbons, charcoal and chars, but also by such materials as zeolite, silica, alumina, mica and some other. All these differ widely in the number and kinds of substances they adsorb, as well as in the amount of sorbed substances they will retain. In general, the silicaneous, metallic oxides and active earth types of adsorbents are electrically polar-that is, their molecular structure contains an unsymmetrical electron distribution. Since polar substances have strong attraction for one another and since water is highly polar, the polar adsorbents mentioned above retain water in preference to most other fluids and are, therefore, incapable of adsorbing non-aqueous gases efficiently from a humid atmosphere. For use in air conservation, however, which requires a sorbent to extract very small quantities of a very numerous variety of gases and vapors from either dry or humid air during a very brief interval of contact, non-polar adsorbents such as specially processed carbon of high activity, dense structure and extreme relative hardness have been found to be adequate. Activated carbon, being non-polar and hence electronically symmetrical in structure, has no particular affinity for moisture and preferentially adsorbs organic gases and vapors. 4, record 54, English, - nonpolar%20adsorbent

Displays and Control Module(DCM)... Along the top are switches for power, communications mode selection, caution and warning. There is also a switch that controls the water that is fed to the Liquid Cooling-and-Ventilation Garment. A digital display is used to monitor the various suit circuits. At the top left of this module is an emergency relief valve. If the primary life support system were to ever malfunction, the astronaut would still have access to the secondary oxygen pack. To activate this secondary oxygen pack, all the astronaut would have to do is open a purge valve by squeezing a set of pinchers. This valve releases air pressure on the chest plate-this is the same valve that is used at the end of EVA [Extravehicular Activity] to depressurize the suit. Also on the left, a step down from the purge valve, is the mechanical-suit pressure gauge. Along the right-hand side of the module, are two switches : the ventilation-fan switch and the push-to-talk switch. The ventilation-fan switch can activate and deactivate a fan which circulates air through the helmet and other parts of the suit. The push-to-talk switch is similar to one you would find on a CB [Citizen Band] radio. If the astronaut wants to talk, he has to push the button to be heard, and if he wants to receive voice messages, he has to release the button.

ICCE is one of the commissions of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences(IAHS). The field of interest of ICCE may be broadly defined as including the erosion, transport and deposition of sediment and the interaction of these processes with other components of the environment and with water resource development. The Commission is principally concerned with promoting improved understanding of erosion and sedimentation processes, primarily as they relate to hydrology and fluvial geomorphology, and including both mechanical and chemical denudation. It also aims to promote the study of global patterns of erosion and sediment yield and their controls and the impact of human activity on erosion and sedimentation and to encourage the development and application of new methods for investigating erosion and sediment delivery, including the use of environmental radionuclides as sediment tracers, and the implementation of novel modelling techniques. 1, record 66, English, - International%20Commission%20on%20Continental%20Erosion

Parsley. Medicinally, the two-year-old roots are employed, also the leaves, dried, for making Parsley Tea, and the seeds, for the extraction of an oil called Apiol, which is of considerable curative value... There are also present fixed oil, resin, Apiin, mucilage and ash. Apiol is an oily, nonnitrogenous allyl compound, insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and crystallizable when pure into white needles. Large quantities of drugs enter our country by boat each year. Drug smuggling is big business, often involving many people and a lot of money and equipment. Fortunately, such large-scale operations can be readily detected by those familiar with normal marine activity. The RCMP's Coastal Watch Program, in the fight against drug importation, wants to enlist the eyes of people in coastal communities. The program goal is two-fold : To teach people what to look for, and to help them effectively transmit any information to the appropriate law enforcement agency. If you are a recreational or professional boater, fuel dock attendant, or vessel broker, or if you live or work near the water, you can play a vital role in the Coastal Watch Program. By reporting suspicious or illegal activities, you can help cut the flow of illicit drugs to our youth and to the rest of the community. 1, record 78, English, - Coastal%20Watch%20Program

1, record 78, French, - Programme%20de%20surveillance%20c%C3%B4ti%C3%A8re

1, record 84, English, - ultrasonic%20cavitation

Figure 6. 1 illustrates a typical open disposal trench at the Barnwell facility. The trench floor is sloped slightly and covered with a layer of sand to facilitate collection of percolating water in a french drain. A number of pipes allow any water that may collect in the french drain to be removed and analyzed. Presently waste, primarily in boxes, drums and cask liners, is stacked neatly in the trench, starting at the high end and progressing toward the low end. High specific activity waste is usually placed at the bottom of the trench. A separate narrower shielded trench is used at Barnwell for waste that has very high dose rates at the package surface. As the level of the waste reaches the design level, 2 m below grade, a layer of dry soil is added and allowed to filter down between the waste containers. When a trench is filled, it is covered with a cap of at least 0. 6 m of compacted native clay, followed by at least 0. 9 m of soil. 2, record 85, English, - open%20storage%20trench

The water activity exerts a strong influence on enzyme activity and stability. This phenomenon must be fully appreciated in order to analyze the effect of a compound on enzyme efficiency, and so as not to misinterpret as direct an indirect effect caused by a modification of water activity. Furthermore, from a technological viewpoint, a better understanding of this phenomenon may allow rationalization of the operation of enzyme catalysts and their improved efficiency. 1, record 92, English, - enzyme%20efficiency

1, record 92, French, - efficacit%C3%A9%20enzymatique

The gel entrapment method involves entrapping of the enzymes within the interstitial spaces of crosslinked water insoluble polymer gels.... The usual method of gel formation is to polymerize acrylamide in an aqueous solution of the soluble enzyme and a crosslinking agent such as N, N-methylenebis(acrylamide). The resulting gel block can be mechanically dispersed into particles of desired size. The broad distribution of pore size of the gel inevitably results in leakage of the entrapped enzyme even after prolonged washing whilst the generation of free radicals in the course of the reaction may affect the activity of the entrapped enzymes. 1, record 93, English, - gel%20entrapment
